Many of the foods we commonly enjoy were either popularized by or invented specifically as carnival food: It is widely believed the Ice Cream Cone was invented at the 1904 St Louis Worlds Fair; Corn dogs were supposedly created in 1942 for the Texas State Fair by Neil Fletcher; Cotton candy was invented in 1897 by William Morrison and John C. Wharton, candy makers from Nashville, Tennessee, and first appeared in 1900 at the Ringling Bros. Circus; Thomas Patton received a patent for the cotton candy machine in 1900; The origin of the hamburger is still unclear—it was invented at either the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair or the 1885 Erie County (N.Y.) Fair
